The Final Curtain

Yesterday, we said a final good-bye to the SRC.

It was kind of ridiculously sad. I’m gonna seriously miss that room.

You may be wondering why we’re leaving…well, there’s a story behind that. Let me start from the beginning:

I first came to CNA-Q (as a full-time student) in August 2007. I pretty much met the people I know from the first day, and in the first couple of weeks alone, the Student Representative Council lounge (usually known solely as the SRC) became our hangout spot. We were a good-sized group of people, and only one of us (Jayson) was an actual Student Council member at that time.

To make a long story short, from the first brief couple of weeks in college, the core of the Army (which was a maybe 10 or so members less than we are now) had taken over the room. It was only used as the SRC office for one hour a week on Tuesdays, which was when their meetings were held. I learned those meetings were usually spent with the council picking on Jayson for letting us hang out there so much. (Plus we weren’t the cleanest group of people—-we were excellent at trashing the place with food, game pieces, playing cards, books and papers). But it was our place, and as the weeks, months (and eventually years) went by, it became our home and Army headquarters.

Not only that, but because we were in that office so much, we were very close to what the SRC was doing, and often volunteered in the activities they set up. More often than not, we as Army members did more for the SRC than actual SRC members—-many of which were even lucky to show up to meetings. This was often the excuse Jay used for us being the office so much, even when the VP at the time went through some lengths to put limits on how much time we could spend there.

Let me clarify something though: If we had anywhere else to go…we would have taken it. There was literally nowhere else for a group like ours to hang out. We grabbed the SRC and we hung on tight.

During the elections in Fall 2008, many Army friends applied for SRC positions, and a whole lot of us (including me) were accepted. This made the room ours for more “legal” reasons, for lack of a better word. We also decided to prohibit eating in the office, which decreased the trash factor by about 90%. People still indulged in candy bars and there were always bottles of water laying around—-but no forks, no aluminium plates, no piles of dirty napkins. It was vastly improved, even as our group of friends got bigger and bigger.

The SRC was our home and we took it for granted that it always would be. It was the first room I went to when I got to college, to put my bag down and greet my friends before class, and the last room I’d exit before making my way home. I never thought it’d be any different.

What Was She THINKING?!

Was she even thinking at all?

Check this out: Woman almost goes blind because she decided she wanted to have blue eyes.

This made me cringe several times. Seriously…why would you put yourself at that kind of a risk? Dammit, some people really seem to have too much time on their hands.

Weather Station 1 also had something to say about it. I had to put my hands over my eyes when I read #3. Bloody freaking hell…

R.I.P Michael Jackson

When I logged in to WordPress this morning, I thought I’d be reading through the usual political/funny posts they have featured on the main page.

So when I saw a link from Fox News saying “In Memorium: Michael Jackson (1958-2009)” my immediate reaction was, “Pffft, yeah right.” I clicked on the link thinking, “They’re probably trying to crack a joke about his career. Maybe it’s their way of headlining an article about him cancelling his comeback tour or something.”

Unfortunately, we were both right. It took me a while to process that he has actually died. No need to state any details—-anyone with a TV or radio or an Internet connection will have drowned in those by now.

Michael Jackson was (is, still) a huge part of my life. Especially during my childhood and early teen years. As a kid (not even in the double-digits yet) my sisters and I would gather around the TV in Saudi Arabia and watch Moonwalker, which we had recorded on videocassette. My favorite parts included his transformations—-especially when he turned into a robot at the end. It was likely one of the coolest things I’d ever seen at that age, especially ’cause you knew that the bad guys were seriously gonna get it now :-P

The Smooth Criminal video was fascinating every time, and hilarious too. (Michael actually shoots a dude who was trying to stab him and the guy pretty much slides backwards and slams cartoonishly through a wall. You can’t tell me that isn’t at least slightly amusing). Also getting crushed pool ball dust blown in your face is pretty freaking funny for a kid.

Damn…there are so many memories crammed into that one video, it’d fill up a lot of space to explain it all. Besides, it wouldn’t be worth it to mention them here since I only share the memories with my sisters. No one else really watched Moonwalker with us. Hehe, I learned to stand on the tips of my toes and hold that position because of MJ. I remember showing it off to my mom when I was six and she said, “Oh, yes that’s like ballet.” I only had a vague idea of what ballet really was so I said, “Nooo, it’s Michael Jackson!”

(For what it’s worth, I can still pull it off. It’s useful when I’m trying to reach something that’s just out of my reach :-P )

George Carlin is Dead

This guy was one of my favorite comedians…I was pretty saddened to hear he died.

This person here does a great job of making a post in his honor.

He’ll sure be missed.

Bjorn: A Legacy of Purrs and Love

Yeah.

I changed the layout again. I like customizable headers. Plus my previous layout didn’t show my categories. What’s the point of providing categories for your posts if the layout doesn’t show them?! Humph.

That’s my cat, Bjorn, in the header. He died in March of this year from pancreatic cancer. (Actually, today would be the 3-month anniversary of his death—-though this post was not meant to commemorate that, it’s just a weird coincidence). I snapped this picture of him when he was perched on my windowsill, looking out. He turned and gave me his somber wise look and that’s when I took the photo. He was still fat and healthy here–this wasn’t too long after we adopted him. His previous owner had raised him and doted on him for eight years before she was forced to give him away due to allergies. (She loved this cat to pieces…I don’t know what I’d do if I had to give a cat like him away). Anyways, I saw the ad for him downstairs in our apartment building and we got him the same day.

Jypsy, our other cat (a gorgeous black, green-eyed babe) hated him. And she never changed that. But she did learn to stop hiding and hissing from under the bed and came to where she could easily be in the same room with him, so long as there was no contact. She never cuddled up to him and the most contact they had was batting each other in the face. (He once scared the mess out of her and he ended up with her detached claw sticking out of his nose. Yes. Kinda disturbing).

To My Darling Lebne:

Honeybunch, your deadline is up. I told you very clearly that if you did not update your LJ by the 28th of February, I would steal your socks. It is now the second of March and you have still not updated.

I regret to inform you that your socks are now my property.

The physical distance between us was, unfortunately, not taken into account at the time of my ultimatum, so I cannot literally take your socks away from you. However, if I do find out that you have been wearing socks without asking my permission after this date, you will be sorry. Very, very sorry. Not even that Cujo incarnate you’ve got running around in that house of yours would be able to save you. Have I made myself clear?

Hurrrrrumph.

Sincerely,

Jubne.

PS: You still owe me three songs. And an e-mail.

PPS: You’re a horrid excuse for a friend. *Cries*

:’-((

Good thing about today: I woke up early. 7:50 a.m. to be exact. Better than my usual 12:00 – 1:00 p.m wake-ups.

Bad thing about today. My grandparents, after a beautiful three month stay, went back to Lebanon.

The house feels so empty without them…they filled it up with so much warmth and laughter…and now it feels so strange. I miss them like crazy already. I gave them the tightest hugs I could muster before they had go through Passport Control and make their way to their gate. My fingers are crossed for the hope that it won’t be long before we see each other again. God I miss Lebanon so much…

And quite frankly, I don’t know how I’m going to sleep in my room again…it’s been theirs for three whole months. That’s gonna be awkward.

Anyways…

Funny/annoying airport glitch. Dad, Madi and I went to the airport ahead of my mom and grandparents to check in the luggage and get their tickets and stuff–save them a lot of standing up and waiting around. We ended up with a very picky guy. He checked their passports and stuff but said that the luggage was way too heavy–especially one of them because it was 38 kg when the limit was 32 kg. We tried to talk him into letting the suitcases through anyways but he’d have none of it. We told him they were seniors and it wasn’t exactly easy for them to carry around 5 kg of luggage by hand but he wouldn’t budge…he also wouldn’t get that irritatingly condescending tone out of his voice. I mean, I know the weight limit is law and all but, really, some people skills never hurt anyone.

So my dad went back to pick up my mom and grandparents and they brought with them another bag, and they shoved a lot of clothes in…finally the weight was fine and they ended up checking in three bags instead of two.

When we dropped them off at the aiport I didn’t want to come back home because I didn’t want to see the house empty–Madi shared my sentiments. We came back for a while and then went out to eat for a change of scenery. Then we dropped Madi off at a friend’s house to work on a history/English project and then came home. We got some Baskin Robbins ice cream, watched a bit of TV and now I’m here typing this up on my LJ. And I still miss them.

*Sighs…*
